Over the last five years, hip-hop has evolved immensely in many different aspects: The sound, the way listeners consume it, and the way new artists are discovered are the main changes we have seen throughout the last half decade. The mixture of hip-hop and other genres has become more common, resulting in a experimental age of hip-hop. Streaming services like Soundcloud has opened an avenue for aspiring artist to post their music for free in effort to hopefully catch the right ear.

Since its formation in 2017, local fanzine Volumes has been instrumental in helping to both chronicle and organize Athens’ flourishing hip-hop scene. Under the Volumes Presents umbrella, founder Sam Lipkin has thrown a series of parties at various downtown venues, most notably the Georgia Theatre Rooftop, which hosts another installment of the femme-centric Queens of Hip Hop showcase Aug. 20. Reflecting a broader scene coalescence that has occurred over the past couple of years, Tuesday’s show not only features exciting local hip-hop talent in the form of rappers Cassie Chantel, L.B. and Don P, but also sets from punk band Nihilist Cheerleader and avant-garde composer Goddess Complex.

In July, Nas released his long-awaited Lost Tapes 2 project. Two weeks later, Drake decided to figuratively dust off the tapes with Care Package, a collection of loosie singles that the Toronto artist rounded up for release on streaming services. Two of the rap game’s most revered figures culled from the well of nostalgia with generally successful results. Drake’s compilation went No. 1 on the Billboard charts with 109,000 first-week units sold, while Nas’ album was generally well-regarded by his core fanbase.
